LinkedIn is an online resume that is easily accessible for recruiters. It can also be a great tool to connect with co-workers and other professionals who post articles and blogs that you are interested in reading. LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network. Here are some of the stats:

  • 347 million people are using LinkedIn, and that number is continually growing!
  • There are 2 new members joining LinkedIn every second
  • 40% of users check their page daily

As you can see, if you don’t have a LinkedIn account, you are falling behind in the professional world. LinkedIn is a very useful tool. It connects you to an enormous amount of professionals in a wide variety of industries. LinkedIn is becoming a primary source for recruitment for many companies. So LinkedIn not only helps recruiting efforts for employers, it also helps the job seekers with their search. According to Lindsey Pollak, a global spokesperson for LinkedIn, a LinkedIn profile is a great way to:

  • Manage Your Professional Brand: It’s no secret that recruiters are going to search for you on social media to see what kind of person you are outside of your interview. Pollak says “recruiters will Google you,” and you need to be in control of what they are going to find. LinkedIn profiles typically rank high in Google searches.
  • Organize Professional Relationships: LinkedIn is a great way to organize and manage professional relationships. Contacts you make during the job hunt and throughout your career may not necessarily make sense as Facebook friends. LinkedIn offers a platform for maintaining your professional network while keeping it separate from your personal life.
  • Become an Expert: The best way to gain credibility in a field is to become a go-to resource. LinkedIn offers a number of tools for helping professionals engage with peers to exchange information and ideas. For example: LinkedIn Groups, LinkedIn Answers, and LinkedIn Today are all great ways to reach out to colleagues and become part of the trending conversations in your field. When it comes to college students and new professionals, Pollak says these tools are “a great way to learn the lingo of your field and become a virtual insider.”
  • Attract Recruiters: Recruiters use LinkedIn. The job search isn’t always an active process, and hiring managers and recruiters use this tool to find candidates to fill openings. Pollak encourages users to pay attention to key words in their profiles. Use attractive words throughout your profile that will make your profile stand out to recruiters. Some examples of key words would be:
    • Developed
    • Demonstrated
    • Resolved
    • Maximized/Minimized
    • Coordinated
    • Introduced
