How To Leave Work at Work

Being able to leave your work at work is one thing when you physically leave the office and travel back home. Working remotely adds challenges as the lines between work and home can become blurred. Knowing that there is no right or wrong way to do this, there are a few things you can try to get you on the right path. It’s important to find the way that works for you!

Create defined boundaries.

Establishing boundaries regarding when you can and can’t access work is as important as making boundaries as to when you can and can’t access home. This can be done a number of ways. Maybe you need to have a rule that you don’t bring your cell phone into your office during your work day or that you keep snacks in your office so you aren’t having to make frequent trips to the kitchen. Whatever you decide to try, make sure it is helping you find a balance between work and home.

Establish a routine.

Having a daily ritual will set the tone for the rest of your day. Starting your day off with a walk, for example, might be just the thing you need to clear your head and help you transition from home to work. Allowing yourself this time is important and will give you the structure you need.

Shut down at the end of your day.

When the end of the day finally arrives, it is important to tie important things off so you can confidently leave your work and enjoy your evening. You don’t want to be worrying about work when you are supposed to be resetting and spending time with your family. To do so, try making a list of things to do before you are done working which may include creating a to-do list for the next day, turning your work email access off on your phone, and closing out of all your work related applications on any devices you plan to continue to use in the evening.

Experiment.

Find what works for you. Tweaks and corrections will need to be made along the way, and that’s okay! It may take some time to find the right routine and break old habits, but once you are able to successfully leave your work at work, you’ll be happy you took the effort to do so!
